How Spell Slots Work in D&D 5e

Spell slots are the fuel for your magic in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Each caster class receives a set number of slots per spell level, determined by their class and character level. When you cast a spell, you expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. Cantrips don't use slots.

Short Rest vs. Long Rest

Most casters recover all spent spell slots after a long rest (typically 8 hours of sleep). Warlocks are the exception: their pact magic slots recharge on a short rest (1 hour), but they have fewer slots that are always cast at the highest available level.

Caster Types

  • Full Casters (Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard) — gain spell slots at every level, up to 9th-level spells.
  • Half Casters (Paladin, Ranger) — gain slots starting at level 2, up to 5th-level spells.
  • Third Casters (Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster) — gain slots starting at level 3, up to 4th-level spells.
  • Artificer — a half caster that rounds up, gaining slots at level 1.
  • Warlock — uses pact magic with fewer, more powerful slots that recharge on short rests, plus Mystic Arcanum at higher levels.

Tips for Managing Spell Slots

Conserve higher-level slots for tough encounters. Use cantrips for consistent damage. Coordinate with your party so you don't burn everything in the first fight. Short rests are your friend — especially if you have a Warlock in the group.
