Play FreeHow D&D 5e Encounter Difficulty Works
The 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide provides XP thresholds for each difficulty tier — Easy, Medium, Hard, and Deadly. Every character level has its own thresholds, and you multiply those by party size to get your party's budget for each tier.
The Encounter Multiplier
More monsters are harder than the raw XP total suggests. The official rules apply a multiplier based on the number of creatures on the opposing side. Two monsters use a ×1.5 multiplier, three to six use ×2, and so on. This calculator applies those multipliers automatically, adjusting for small (<3) and large (≥6) parties.
Tips for Balanced Encounters
- Mix CRs — A boss with minions is more interesting than a single bag of hit points.
- Terrain matters — Chokepoints, cover, and elevation can shift difficulty more than CR.
- Resource drain — Multiple Medium encounters wear a party down faster than one Deadly fight.
- Know your party — Optimized builds punch above their level. Adjust accordingly.
