Play FreeHow to Generate D&D Loot
This generator uses treasure tables inspired by the Dungeon Master's Guide. Select a challenge rating tier and choose between individual creature loot or a full treasure hoard, then hit roll. Every result is randomized with proper dice math.
Individual vs. Hoard Treasure
Individual treasure is what a single creature carries — a few coins and maybe a gem. Use it for random encounters and minor enemies. Hoard treasure is the big payoff — a dragon's den, a bandit king's vault, or a dungeon boss's final room. Hoards include gold piles, gems, art objects, and magic items.
Challenge Rating Tiers
- CR 0-4: Copper and silver dominate. Hoards might include a potion of healing or a low-level scroll.
- CR 5-10: Electrum and gold appear. +1 weapons, useful wondrous items, and better potions.
- CR 11-16: Gold and platinum. +2 gear, staves, and powerful rings start showing up.
- CR 17+: Massive platinum hoards. Legendary items like Holy Avenger, Vorpal Sword, and the Deck of Many Things.
Tips for Giving Out Loot
- Match the story — A goblin camp should have different treasure than a lich's phylactery vault.
- Spread it out — Not every encounter needs loot. Save hoards for milestone moments.
- Make it interesting — A plain +1 sword is fine, but a +1 sword with a name and a backstory is memorable.
- Consider party needs — If nobody plays a caster, that Staff of Fire might collect dust.
