Join StoryRoll FreeThe Complete D&D 5e Spell List
The D&D 5th Edition Systems Reference Document includes over 300 spells across eight schools of magic. Whether you're building a Wizard's spellbook, choosing prepared spells for your Cleric, or looking for the perfect cantrip for your Warlock, filtering the full list is the fastest way to find what you need.
Schools of Magic
Every spell belongs to one of eight schools: Abjuration (protection and warding), Conjuration (summoning and teleportation), Divination (knowledge and detection), Enchantment (mind-affecting), Evocation (elemental damage and energy), Illusion (deception and trickery), Necromancy (life, death, and undeath), and Transmutation (changing matter and form).
Concentration Spells
Many of the most powerful spells in 5e require concentration. You can only concentrate on one spell at a time, and taking damage forces a Constitution saving throw to maintain it. Planning which concentration spell to use is one of the biggest tactical decisions a spellcaster makes each combat.
Ritual Casting
Spells with the ritual tag can be cast without expending a spell slot — it just takes 10 extra minutes. Wizards can ritual cast any ritual spell in their spellbook, even if it's not prepared. This makes ritual spells like Detect Magic, Identify, and Find Familiar incredibly valuable for resource conservation.
Choosing Spells by Class
Each spellcasting class has access to a different subset of the spell list. Wizards have the largest selection but must find or copy spells into their spellbook. Clerics and Druids have access to their entire class list and choose prepared spells each day. Bards, Sorcerers, and Warlocks know a limited number of spells that are harder to change. Paladins and Rangers are half-casters with smaller but focused spell lists.
