What Is Wild Magic Surge in D&D 5e?

Wild Magic Surge is a feature of the Wild Magic Sorcerer subclass in D&D 5th Edition. After casting a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, the Game Master can have you roll a d20. On a 1, you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to determine a random magical effect — which could be anything from harmless butterflies to a self-centered fireball.

How the Wild Magic Surge Table Works

The original table uses a d100 roll with 50 entries (each covering two numbers). This tool simplifies that by picking one of the 50 effects directly. Each effect is tagged by type (beneficial, harmful, or neutral) and severity (mild, moderate, or extreme) so you can quickly gauge the impact.

Tips for Game Masters

  • Roll openly — Wild Magic is more fun when the whole table sees the result and reacts together.
  • Lean into the chaos — a self-fireball or turning into a potted plant makes for great stories.
  • Adjust the trigger — some GMs use an escalating d20 threshold (surge on 1, then 1–2, then 1–3, etc.) to make surges more frequent.
  • Homebrew additions — the core table has 50 effects, but many groups expand it with custom entries for their campaign.
